EDU 153 - Multicultural Education 3 Credit Hours
This course provides an assessment of culture, equity, and bias and their effect on teaching and learning in K-8 settings in an ever-changing world. Self-reflection, case studies, class discussion, and research will assist potential teachers to prepare for the intricacies of this topic in their classrooms and on a global level. This course seeks to empower future teachers to navigate challenges concerning social class, race, religion, gender, ethnicity, geography, language, exceptionality, youth culture, and school reform and classroom assessment from a Christian perspective of knowledge, love, and human understanding. Through real-life and hypothetical scenarios, students will be challenged to reflect, defend, and consider how topics affect them personally and in the classroom. Through reflexivity, students will develop awareness in areas of critical consciousness and social identities to identify areas for personal growth and educator responsibility. Social justice pedagogies will also be explored. Field experience hours are part of the course requirements (5 hours).
